Projects

Over the years the Saarte Geopark has implemented several projects. Environmental awareness raising projects have been mainly financed by the Environmental Investment Centre (KIK).

Implemented projects

  • In 2010 Strategy of the Geopark of the Saare county was compiled. This was financed by the KIK and by the local county governments (municipalities). Fullfilling that geopark strategy is the main purpose and foundation of the activities of the Saarte Geopark.
In 2011 publication about the tracks and routes of the Islands' Silurian Geopark (Saarte Silurimaa Geopark) was compiled in Estonian, English and German languages.

  • In August 2011 an international Geopark conference took place. Conference was financed by the KIK and by the local county governments (municipalities).

  • In 2012 the project "Labelling visiting objects of the Islands´ Silurian Geopark" was implemented. The project was necessary in purpose of introducing geotourism object and routes, to explain their natural and historical value, also to raise awarenees of all interested parties and to help preserve those values. In the framework of the project 15 information boards with the information about 21 geological objects and Silurian period in Estonian, English and German languages, 20 road signs and 5 geopark maps were installed to help visitors to find objects more easily. The project was financed by the KIK and by the members of the Saarte Geopark.

  • In 2012 the project "Awareness raising about the Islands´ Silurian Geopark" was implemented. The main goals of the project was to involve local school students into organization of the local GeoWeek and to implement bus excursions for the students to get familiarized with the geological values. In the framework of the project 4 excursions took place in April and May 2012 for the local students. In the excursions 104 students and 11 grown-ups (mostly teachers) participated. The project was financed by the KIK and by the members of the Saarte Geopark.

  • To continue with the activities the project "Awareness raising about the Islands´ Silurian Geopark among school students" was implemented. 10 excursions in April and May and also in September and October 2013 took place for the school students. In the excursions 188 students and 90 grown-ups participated. The project was financed by the KIK and by the members of the Saarte Geopark.

  • In the framework of the project "Awareness raising about the Islands´ Silurian Geopark in 2014-2015" 15 excursions in April, May and October 2014 took place. Interest toward participating in the excursions was very high and most of the excursions took place in the Spring of 2014. In the excursions 420 students and 41 grown-ups (mostly teachers) participated. The project was financed by the KIK and by the members of the Saarte Geopark.

  • In the February 2012 project "Nordic Geoguide School I" ended. The purpose of the project was to develop geoguide school materials in cooperation with the Magma Geopark from Norway and the Katla Geopark from Iceland. The project was financed by the Nordplus programme, co-financing came from KIK and from the members of the Saarte Geopark.

  • To continue with the activities started with the previous project new Application was submited to Nordplus Horizontal programm. The Application was approved. In the second part of the project, theoretical training took place for the guides for the Geopark, also the practical training took place. Geoguide course financed by the Saarte Geopark took place in the April and May 2013 in the Kuressaare College of the Tallinn University of Technology. The course was succesfully graduated by 39 future guides.

  • In 2012 Nordplus Horizontal programm project „Treasure Hunt Games – New way of Active Learning I“ ended. It was a treasure hunt for school students for searching and locating the geo-values with the help of smart phones and e-environment. Saarte Geopark and also geoparks and colleges from Iceland and Norway participated. As a result of the project TurfHunt application was developed.

  • In the Spring 2013 a project Application was submitted to Saarte Koostöökogu (local Leader programm group). Project "Participation on the Europea Geopark Network 12th Conference" got positive financing decision. Saarte Geopark has been participating on the European Geopark Network yearly conferences since 2011 and on the Global Geopark Network conferences since 2014.
